Graduate Courses

Ph.D. in Mathematics

UConn’s Ph.D. in Mathematics offers a rigorous path of advanced coursework and original research, with the flexibility to concentrate in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or actuarial science. Students build a strong foundation through core courses and prelims, preparing them to become members of the mathematical research community. They collaborate closely with faculty mentors and ultimately craft a dissertation that advances mathematical knowledge.

For those drawn to actuarial science, UConn is home to one of the nation’s leading graduate programs—and the only one of its kind in New England. The actuarial science concentration within the Mathematics Ph.D. combines deep theoretical training with practical engagement, supported by the Janet and Mark L. Goldenson Research Center for Actuarial Science. Students explore emerging challenges in the field, work alongside practitioners, and pursue research with real-world impact. While designed for academic and research careers rather than actuarial practice, this distinctive track provides unparalleled opportunities to shape the future of the discipline.

Students benefit from close faculty mentorship and flexible degree paths tailored to academic or professional goals. The actuarial science concentration aligns with Society of Actuaries and CAS exams, allowing professional exam credit to count toward degree requirements.
