An Introduction to Heisenberg Type Groups

In this talk we examine the groups of Heisenberg type, a particular generalization of the Heisenberg group. To appreciate these groups, we begin by studying the boundary of hyperbolic spaces over the complexes, which turn out to be one point compactifications of Heisenberg groups. This naturally leads to the subelliptic Laplacian, and, more generally, Hormander operators, which have an interesting relationship with more general nilpotent Lie groups. After developing this context, we may construct the Heisenberg type groups, and begin studying their relatively explicit analysis, algebra, and geometry.
