MATH 5040: Topics in Applied Analysis I
Description: Advanced topics from the theory of ordinary or partial differential equations. Other possible topics: integral equations, optimization theory, the calculus of variations, advanced approximation theory. With a change of content, this course is repeatable to a maximum of twelve credits.
MATH 5040 - Section 1: Introduction to Variational Methods
Description: We will briefly go through Sobolev spaces (detailed proof will be taught at the PDE class) and use them extensively; which serves as a motivation on why such spaces are studied. Minimizers and constrained minimizers of functionals, simple regularity estimates, mountain pass theorem, applications to traveling wave, concept of Gamma convergence, some connection to numerical methods.
