Announcements

·       Friday, 10/5/07: Midterm grades will be submitted to the registrar today.  You can access all of your grades here, please check to make sure that my records match yours.  Your midterm average was computed as follows

midterm average=(1/30)*(Quiz 1)+ (1/30)*(Quiz 2)+ (1/30)*(Quiz 3)+(9/10)*(2*MT 1).

Midterm grades were assigned by the following scale:

A ≤90 < A-≤86< B+ ≤82< B ≤78< B-≤74< C+ ≤70< C ≤66< C-≤62 < D+ ≤58< D ≤54< D-≤50<F

THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THIS SCALE WILL BE USED TO DETERMINE YOUR FINAL GRADE!!!!

Remember that there will be a quiz on sections 4.1 and 4.2 (differentiation) on Monday 10/8/07; the quiz is intended to test your ability to use the differentiation formulas correctly, not your ability to memorize them, so all relevant differentiation formulas will be printed on it.

·       Tuesday, 9/25/07: The weekly review session will begin on Wednesday 9/27 at 6 pm in MSB 118 and continue throughout the semester, this is in addition to the two review sessions this weekend which are intended as preparation for the first midterm.

·       Monday, 9/24/07:  Here are Quiz 3 and the solutions.  The first exam is on Monday, 10/1; you will be allowed to have a TI-84 or less and a 4x6 notecard which you should keep for the final.  Review session times, a review sheet, a practice exam and the actual first midterm from spring ‘07 are posted here.  THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE FOR THE EXAM IS TO KNOW HOW TO DO ALL OF THE PROBLEMS ON THE PRACTICE MIDTERM.

·       Thursday, 9/13/07: Quiz 2 has been graded and will be returned in lecture tomorrow, here are the solutions. Even though this is a very small fraction of your grade, I included some statistics so you know how you did in comparison to the rest of the class.

·       Wednesday, 9/12/07: Quiz 2 was given in lecture.

·       Monday, 9/10/07: in the handout, add an x as the exponent in rule 5, it should be (a/b)x.  As you know, Wednesday’s quiz will be on sections A8 and 1.2.  I promised that one question from every quiz will be from the homework and since there is no homework listed for A8, the question from the homework will have to come from 1.2.  There were a few questions on these problems so I wrote an explanation of a few of them here. The quiz question will not be #17 or #19 because of the confusion and because both 17 and 19 involve quadratics which were covered on the take home quiz.  Finally, if you want to know what to study for section A8, any of problems 11-46 would be good practice.  Don’t go crazy but be sure to understand how to manipulate the graph of a function based on the shift/expansion/contraction/reflection table on the handout.

·       Friday, 9/7/07: There are two minor errors in today’s handout: on the first page “(variable cost)+(fixed cost)” should be “(variable cost)*(fixed cost),” and in example 1, change $3480 per ton to $3840 per ton to be consistent with the textbook.

·       Wednesday, 9/5/07: Quiz 1 was handed out today – return it to me in office hours or by appointment anytime before the first exam (10/1/07).  The first in class quiz will be one week from today and will cover sections A.8 and 1.2.  There is a mistake in the handout for A.7: on page 2 in the line of computation which ends with “Complete the square,” cross off “+c/a”, h and k are correct as written.  We’ll finish the handout on Friday and continue to section 1.2.

·       Tuesday, 9/4/07: Due to a scheduling conflict, I have to change my office hours.  The new office hours are MW: 1-2 and F: 11-12 & 1-2.

·       Thursday, 8/30/07:  Links to course handouts have been disabled, if you need an extra copy please email me and I will send you the handout as an attachment.  The schedule of lectures link now takes you to a schedule which is modified for sections 3 & 6, without linking to the handouts.
