Common Home Page: The course policies common to all Math 109 courses this semester can be found at the Math 109 Common Home Page, http://www.math.uconn.edu/~gageonea/math109f05/index.html. Please check this web site for the course outline and policies regarding makeup exams, calculators, and schedule conflicts.
Grading Policy: Your grade will be calculated as follows:

Quizzes and Group Assignments 10%
Exam 1 (1.1 to 2.4) 20%
Exam 2 (3.1 to 3.5) 20%
Exam 3 (4.1 to 4.7) 20%
Final Exam (all of the above plus 2.5 and 4.8 to 5.3) 30%

There will be extra credit on each exam. There will not be a curve. No makeup exams will be allowed.
Quizzes: Once a week there will be a short (approx. 10 min) quiz given at the start of class. Each quiz is worth 10 points, and the two lowest quiz grades will be dropped at the end of the semester. No makeup quizzes will be allowed.
Group Assignments: Occasionally I will ask you to work on a few problems in a small group (about 3 people per group) and turn in one set of solutions for a grade. This assignment will also be worth 10 points and will be given instead of an individual quiz for the week. (Again, no makeups allowed.)
Homework: After each class period, you will be assigned exercises in the textbook to be done as homework problems. Homework will not be graded, but it is extremely important that you work through the homework problems and understand the concepts. You will be expected to know the material covered in the homework problems for the quizzes and exams, so it is to your advantage to do them.
Leaving Early: If you need to leave class early for any reason (unless it is an emergency), please let me know before the start of class.
Classroom Behavior: Please do not talk during lecture or disrupt the class in any way. Food and drink are allowed as long as you are quiet and you do not disturb anyone. Remember to turn off your cell phone or set it to silent mode before the start of class.

Announcements

8/29/05: Reminder-- stop by one of my office hours (by no set date but try to do it in the first or second week of classes) to receive 10 points as your first quiz grade. Even if you don't have any questions at this time, it helps me to get to know your names and it helps you to know where my office is and how to find help if/when you need it.

Also if you are interested in the solution to today's in-class math puzzle, click here.

8/31/05: Click here to download the algebra review sheet that I mentioned in class today. (PDF file)

Also note that on the homework, the page 12 it refers to is past the first section in the textbook. Keep flipping pages past the black and white pages to find the real chapter 1.

9/2/05: Reminder-- the first quiz is next Wednesday. It will cover sections 1.2 and 1.3, including today's lecture. To prepare, look over your homework problems from these two sections.

9/19/05: Your first exam is this Friday, September 23. The practice exam is here; print it out and start working through it on your own. We'll go over it in class this Wednesday.
