This includes an explaination of how the game is played and your strategy for winning. Remember, we are writing to a child, so keep your assumptions to a minimum and us plain English. If you need help understanding the game, it is explained on pages 15-17 of our book, or you can come and talk to me. |
| 3. | Sept 16 | Sept 17 | Part 1: (4 points) List and explain the unique symmetries of a square. Part 2: Changing fifty cents (Pg 20): List the ways to make change for fifty cents using pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Hint: There is no trick to this, the majority of the problem is in how you construct your list. |
| 4. | Sept 23 | Sept 24 | Read and do Prom Problem on page 30-31 in your book. I want you to explain your answers in a very specific way. Assign each of the bulleted points in the book a letter. Make a numbered list of all your observations, and every time you make an X on the chart, put the number of the observation that makes it so. I have started this for you herer: Homework 4 |
| 5. | Oct 7 | Oct 8 | Worth 15 points: I want you to read Parkinglot on page 55 of the book. I want you to explain the average wait time you would expect if the shoppers shop for an average of 1 hour if there are 4, or 16 parking spaces (so two separate answers). Then assume that the average shopping time is 4 hours and there are 16 spaces. I want you to give a breif explanation of your work. I want you to explain (a) under what conditions you would wait (breifly). Then (b) give a variation of the problem in which the model we used will not work and explain why the model breaks down. (hint: think about our assumptions) |
| 6. | Oct 14 | Oct 15 | Read Cryptarithmetic (do not do) on page 58 in the book. Then do problems 1,3,4, and 5 in the Cryparithmatic Problems on page 107. Explain your reasons and check your work! |
| 7 | Oct 21 | Oct 22 | Click here |
| 8. | Oct 28 | Oct 29 | Read, solve, and explain your answer for Multiple Locks on page 69 in the Pause and Reflect chapter of the book. I'm leaving your strategy largely up to you, this problem is within your reach to solve. Remember to think about plan of attack. Here are some hints: What can you deduce from the rules of the problem? For example: Can any member have all the keys? Can someone be left without any keys? I suggest you simplify the problem by thinking about the math club having fewer members (A chart can help explain the distribution). REMEMBER: Explaining your answer includes an explanation why your answer is the most economical. |
| 9. | Nov 4 | Nov 3 | Read Chapter 8: Interpersonal Problems, then use the information to do My Stuff on page 81. -- Briefly explain an interpersonal problem you may have had, and give a specific example of how you used or could have used each of the PSSSP points to solve this problem. |
| 10. | Nov 18 | Nov 19 | 15 Points Read and do House Hunt on Page 116 in the book. I expect you to show me how you are keeping track of your logic, it gets tricky, I recommend that you do not leave this to last minute. |
| 11. | Dec 2 | Dec 3 | Give your answers for the True False Problems on pages 133-134, and explain your reasoning. If you are stuck, a good way to start is to just pick one and guess (remember to note which one you are guessing) and draw conclusions from that, remember to check your answer at the end. |
| *EC* | Dec 9 | Dec 10 | Extra Credit, 5 points. |
