While the U.S. ranks first in gross domestic product, it ranks 21st among the 25 top industrialized nations in the world in eighth grade math scores. Half of the high school seniors from low-income communities won't graduate from high school. Those who do graduate will, on average, read and do math at the level of eighth graders from high-income communities. This is our nation's most pressing problem. But it doesn't have to be this way. Math students taught by a teacher who majored in math outperform their peers by one full grade level. We will talk about how recent college graduates can help solve this problem both in the short and long-term, while continuing to pursue their long-term career goals. More specifically, we'll talk about how math and science majors are uniquely positioned to make an even greater impact than most.
