A stochastic matrix is a matrix whose columns represent the probability that a given system will change from one state to another. Associated to each stochastic matrix is a steady-state vector, which indicates the system's behavior “in the long run.” A nice application of these concepts is Google’s innovative page rank algorithm. I’ll introduce the mathematics of stochastic matrices and show how they can be applied in this example and others. A basic knowledge of linear algebra would be helpful.
