In surveying any region of appreciable size on the Earth, the curvature of the surface needs to be taken into account. In particular, the ordinary geometry of the plane must be replaced by a suitable geometry for a sphere, including spherical trigonometry. We will illustrate this by discussing how to compare the positions of two points on the Earth.
