It is often claimed that the Babylonians were the first to solve quadratic equations. But is it so? We will talk about problems encountered in their tablets, how they solved them, and give a little insight into what an equation is and what algebra means (originally). Then we will talk about cubics and explain Cardano's formula for their roots, which shows how cubics (not quadratics!) are at the origin of complex numbers.
