The textbook will be A First Course in Probability by Sheldon Ross. I won't assign problems out of the textbook, so you're welcome to use either the 8th or 9th edition. The sections mentioned on the official schedule are those in the 9th edition. Please let me know if you're having trouble finding the book.
The course grade will be determined as follows:
Homework will be assigned weekly (the problems can be found here). In general, the problems will be due on Thursdays at the beginning of class and will cover the material discussed in the previous week. Since I may discuss the homework problems in class that Thursday, no late assignments will be accepted except under the most extreme circumstances. If you have an emergency that you think may be an extreme circumstance, please let me know as soon as possible. The lowest homework score will be dropped regardless.
I encourage you to work with your classmates and ask me questions if you get stuck, but I expect you to write the names of any classmates you worked with on your homework. While you are allowed to use any kind of calculator you like when you do the homework, I urge you not to rely on it heavily since it may not be permitted on exams (rather like your classmates' help!).
There will be two midterms and a comprehensive final exam in this class. The midterms will be given in class on February 18 and March 25, and the date for the final exam will be determined later in the term.
Please avoid making travel arrangements that would not allow you to take the final at the scheduled time. UConn policy is not to allow rescheduling for this sort of reason. Please note that vacations, previously purchased tickets or reservations, graduations, social events, misreading the assessment schedule, and oversleeping are not viable excuses for missing a final exam. If you think that your situation warrants permission to reschedule, please contact OSSA to meet with a staff member by the deadline.
I apply almost the same policy to midterm exams as the final exam: if your reason for missing the midterm would be acceptable as a reason for missing the final, I will arrange for a makeup exam, but not otherwise. The exception is the "Bunched Finals" clause on that page -- I won't reschedule your midterm in a situation like that.
You are welcome to bring a calculator to your midterms and your final exam as long as that calculator satisfies the Mathematics Department Calculator Policy (reproduced below). If you aren't sure whether your calculator is acceptable, please come see me before the exam.
Calculators that can perform symbolic operations (such as the HP 28 or 48, or TI-92 or 89) are not allowed. If you bring a calculator to the exam, make sure it cannot perform alphanumeric manipulation. The instructor may randomly ask for calculators and check programs stored in memory. No alphanumeric formulas stored as programs are allowable. Discovery of such material will result in serious consequences. Sanctions can include, but are not limited to, a letter sent to the Dean of Students of the University; a grade of 0 on the assignment, quiz or exam; a grade of F for the course.You should know that I will never assign a problem on an exam that will require the use of a calculator and that overreliance on your calculator may actually hurt you! If you are in actuarial science, you may want to use the calculator that you plan to use on the P Exam. The list of acceptable calculators for the P Exam can be found here.
If you're having trouble understanding the course material, you have a few options...
I expect you to be familiar with and abide by UConn's academic integrity policy at all times. There should be no help given or received on midterms or the final exam, and you will not be allowed to use computational aids that do not satisfy the calculator policy described above in the Exams section (note that slide rules and abaci are acceptable).
If you have accessibility issues, I encourage you to discuss possible accommodations with me and consult the Center for Students with Disabilities in Room 204 of the Wilbur Cross Building. This office can help determine appropriate accommodations for you.
