Fall 2011

  • Math 2010Q-01: Fundamentals of Algebra and Geometry I

  • Class meetsTuesdays and Thursdays 2-3:50 PM in MSB 403.

This course, together with Math 2011Q, is designed to develop a profound understanding of concepts, structures, and algorithms constituting the core of K-8 mathematics curriculum from an advanced perspective. The topics of the course are chosen to support and extend the recommendations set forth by NCTM in the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (2000). Typically, Math 2010 topics include numeration systems; whole numbers, rational numbers, and integers; operations on these sets of numbers, standard and non-standard algorithms, relationships between operations, students' understanding of operations, operations in different bases, mental computation and estimation; proportional and algebraic reasoning. The focus is on building mathematical proficiency, emphasizing mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding. Special attention is given to communicating ideas using sound explanations that are based on logical reasoning and that use appropriate mathematical terminology.
The intended audience for this course is prospective elementary teachers. Please note that Math 2010Q does not count toward a major or minor in mathematics.

Please note that detailed information for each course (Syllabus, schedule, updates, etc.) is now posted on Husky Course Tools HuskyCT which is available only to registered students.
