Blanchard, Devaney, Hall.
The Class Photos: Find out who's who here.
Slope Field Applet. Here.
Phase Portrait Applet . Here.
Evaluation: There will be two mid-term exams and one final exam. Homework will appear on this website each week along with its due date. Usually a week will be given to complete the assignments. Quizzes will be announced a few days in advance. The points awarded will be as follows:
| |
| Exam 1: | 100 points |
| Exam 2: | 100 points |
| Final: | 150 points |
| HW/quizzes: | 100 points |
|
| Total: | 450 points |
Exam: Wed Mar 1.
The exam will be on everything we have done up to this week, including systems of equations. Pay special attention to mixing problems, compound interest problems and solving linear equations using the multiplying factor method. You may also be asked to interpret slope fields for DEs or vector fields for systems of DEs. You should look at the following problems:
Practice problems: (Systems of DEs) Chapter 2.1, 9-14; Chapter 2.2, 13-16 17-21
Questions like these could be on the exam. Ask in class if you don't know how to do them.
Here are some review questions on linear equations. Again - if there are some questions here that you can't do - ASK in class. I'm also available in my office most afternoons.
Review on linear equations: Chapter 1.8 1, 5, 10, 14, 29
Syllabus:
We will be studying the first six chapters of the textbook.
Homework:
| HW # | Chapter and numbers | Due date | Comments |
| 1 | §1.1:   1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 | Fri, Jan 27 | Ask in class if you have any questions or difficulties! To do numbers 5, 6 and 7 you will have to read the second half of page 15.
Also send me an email about yourself and your math background. Include a (decent) photo |
| 2 | §1.2:   1, 2, 3, 11, 17, 19, 30, 36, 41 | Fri, Feb 3 | For #41 read "A Savings Model" on page 28 |
| 3 |
§1.3:   7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 18
§1.4:   5, 6, 7, 8 (print out results)
|
Fri, Feb 10 |
The applet on the website can be used to do Euler's method calculations. On the right hand side of the applet there is a field labelled "step". Increase this value and see what happens. This will help you do §1.4: 5, 6, 7, 8. To get a good picture you will have to play around with the max and min x and y values. Also play with the "Num. of Segs" field. Use step=0.1 as a comparison to the other two values. |

If a question asks to "sketch" a phase portrait, use the applet on the website or the software on your CD. |
