Minor in Mathematics

General Information

Boy Surface

Students majoring in another department within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or in another college within the University may elect to minor in mathematics. The minor is designed to give students a solid foundation in mathematics as well as some experience in the discipline at an advanced level.
The University requires that at least 15 credits of 2000-level courses be taken for the minor in courses specified by the granting department, that each course being used for the minor have a grade of C (2.0) or better and that no substitutions from the department's stated requirements are allowed.
The minor is described in more detail in the Course Catalog.

Math Department Requirements
The department requirements for the minor are:

  • Track 1:
    • Math 2141Q(243Q), Math 2142Q(244Q), Math 2143Q(245Q) and Math 2144Q(246Q) or
  • Track 2:
    • Math 2110Q(210Q) or Math 2130Q(230Q), and
    • Math 2410Q(211Q) or Math 2420Q(221Q), and
    • Math 2210Q(227Q) or Math 3210Q(215Q), and
    • Two courses from the following list of Math courses: 3710(204), 3230(216) (or 4210(265)), 2360(223), 3160(231), 3260(235), 3330(250) (or 4310(267)), 3146(252), 3240(258), 3150(273) (or 4110(261)), 3510(281), 4735(286) or certain sections of 3094(297), 3795(298), and 3799(299) approved by the department head.
Some accommodations will be made for those who start Track 1 and who wish to change to Track 2. Please contact the department for more information as indicated below.

Math 2000 Level Course Prerequisites
As of Fall 2004, the prerequisite for Math 2000 level courses is Math 1132Q(116Q) or Math 1152Q(136Q) (formerly Math 121Q). For this reason, students intending to minor in mathematics using Track 2 should take either

  • Math 1131Q(115Q) and Math 1132Q(116Q), or
  • Math 1120Q(112Q), Math 1121Q(113Q) and Math 1132Q(116Q), or
  • Math 1151Q(135Q) and Math 1152Q(136Q)
as early in their career as possible.
