Geometric Analysis

Description
Geometric analysis, as a separate discipline, has only been recognized for the past few years. It now encompasses areas which previously lay in the overlap between geometry and any of several areas of mathematics and other technical disciplines. Among the areas studied by faculty and graduate students at UConn are:

  • Theoretial and computer graphical studies of geometric phenomena such as self-similar patterns (fractals), stability and chaotic phenomena caused by the presence of nonlinearity (e.g. behavior of functions under iteration).
  • Geometries on symplectic manifolds.
  • Two and three-dimensional spaces - geometric structures, modern mathematical (particle) physics, relationship to number theory.
  • Computer studies of quasiconformal mappings and finite approximations to ergodic behavior.
  • Hamiltonian systems and foliations.
  • Minimal surfaces (soap bubbles).
  • Modern mathematical physics.
  • Low dimensional topology/geometry.
  • Spectral theory.
