Distinguished Alumni Award

The first Department of Mathematics Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to Professor Richard A. Brualdi on Thursday, March 29, 2007.

Professor Ricahrd A. Brualdi graduated with a Bachelors degree in Mathematics in 1960. Since earning a Ph.D. degree from the University of Syracuse in 1964, he has been a professor at the University of Wisconsin for 42 years. His main areas of interest have been linear algebra and combinatorial matrix theory.

His achievements include:
  • He has over 220 papers published in peer reviewed journals.
  • He has supervised 33 Ph.D. students.
  • He has been an editor-in-chief or on the editorial board of some 20 research journals.
  • He has been the President of the International Linear Algebra Society for 6 years.
  • He has been a department head for 6 years.
And the list goes on.

The celebration on the 29th will begin at 4:00 pm when Professor Brualdi will deliver a colloquium talk on "Matrix Diagonals" to our faculty and guests. The abstract for his talk may be found from the colloquium portion of the department web site.

The colloquium will be followed by a reception at 5:15 in the Math Lounge at which time Michael Neumann, our Department Head, will present Professor Brualdi with his award.

The reception will be followed by dinner at the Alumni Center.


The department plans in the future to honor other distinguished alumni who have graduated with a Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral degree. Honorees will be selected on the basis of their achievements in academia, business, education, government, industry, science or other spheres since graduating from the University of Connecticut.
