Graduate Prelim Exams

The table below provides links to past prelim exams. The most recent syllabi for the prelim exams in the different areas are in the last row of the table. Course numbers at UConn changed from 3 digits to 4 digits starting in Aug. 2008, so prelim exams before and after this date have different numbers (e.g., Algebra used to be Math 315 and starting in August 2008 it became Math 5210).

The three tracks in the Ph.D. program (pure, applied, actuarial) each require 4 prelims. They are as follows.
  • Pure math needs Math 5111, Math 5120, Math 5210 and Math 5310. Course descriptions are here.
  • Applied math needs Math 5111, Math 5120, Math 5410 and Math 5510. Course descriptions are here.
  • Actuarial Science needs Math 5160, Math 5637, and any two others.
Other (individualized) tracks are possible by petition if approved by the graduate committee.
