You will have regular, graded homework. Assignments are viewed and answers submitted online using WebAssign. Before you purchase a text for the course be sure to have a plan for purchasing a WebAssign code to go along with it.

Setting up your WebAssign account

To begin, you will need a class key from your instructor. This key is particular to the numbered section of the course you are registered for. When you are ready to get started, go to the WebAssign student support page and read the "Student Quick Start Guide." There is a link to the student support page in the left hand column. Since you will be self-enrolling, follow the instructions beginning on page 2 of the quick start guide. Note that you have two weeks to enter a valid WebAssign code, so you can get started on the homework right away, even if you have not yet purchased the text and/or WebAssign code.

Now that you are able to login take a turn back to the student support page and have a look at the "Student Guide." This is a 110 page pdf document. You probably don't want to read it through right now but it is a good idea to scroll through and see exactly what information it contains. When you have a question later on you can be fairly confident that the answer is somewhere in the student guide. If not, there are several other places to look for help: WebAssign offers support by phone or email, your instructors are a ready resource as is the Q-center. If all else fails and you want immediate help, ask a friend.

Homework information

There will be a homework assignment for each section of the text. An assignment will become available on WebAssign before the section is covered in class. The DUE DATE for each assignment will be set by your instructor and will generally be a couple of days after the material is covered in class. You can see this information on your WebAssign page. You will get 5 attempts to answer each question. After each attempt you will be told whether your answer is correct or not. With many problems you will be penalized for an incorrect response, on the first as well as on successive tries, so make the effort to get it right the first time. This feature will not go into effect until you have had time to familiarize yourself with WebAssign.

If you are having trouble with a problem, we recommend that you seek help from your discussion leader=TA, the Q-Center (see below), a tutor, or another student. Full solutions will be available on WebAssign after the due date. It is a very good idea to go through the solutions to problems you were challenged by. This way, you will be prepared if the same problem appears again on a quiz or exam.

On rare occasions students may have a good reason to request more time to finish their homework. To request an extension, speak with your discussion leader.
